poets and presidents
his eyes feast
swallowing with little difficulty
the hearts surrounding him
as there she stands, skin of coffin silk
“poets and presidents die most pitiful,”
in mockery, this masterpiece of her mouth
disposed of with little interest
he is not used to this enchantment
and though deeply troubled,
his natural tendency calls for a
mechanical smile mistaken for caged charm.
